I guess people were reading more into my "plain old oscilloscope" use in place of the
SM220/230. I was refering to the simple time domain type of signal display for
viewing the waveform. Currently I have two SM-220's connected to my R-820 receiver.
The R-820 is triple conversion unlike the TS-820 which is only dual conversion. One
of my SM-220's has the BS-8 panadapter inside and is used on the 8.83 IF for spectrum
display near the operating frequency. The other SM-220 does not have the BS-8 and is
used simply for it's time domain function just like a simple oscilloscope. This
second unit is connected to the 50KHz IF out on the R-820. This allows me to view the
received signals waveform. For AM signals it would be the RF envelope that is viewed
or just a simple keyed sine wave for CW signals. You get the idea.
So when I was stating that an o-scope could be used in place of the SM-220 it was only
for this time-domian signal observation. Still it sure does look alot nicer having
both Kenwood scopes running at once with the R-820. Also quite an equipment line
(Kenwood 8-line) when transceived with the TS-820.
