[Kenwood] What am I missing here?

Perhaps phase noise effects and roofing filter effects are being hidden
by the 20 KHz spacing. Both effects could make a receiver with good
numbers play lousy in a 2 KHz spaced contest environment.
Look at the Hohentwiel transceiver for 2m. It appears to have circuitry
to run 50 mile circles around any other 2m receiver. It is practical, I
believe, to set up additional RF boards for 6m, 222, and 432 mixing the
2m VCXO to make the injection for the other bands. I have a set of the
kit on order, I plan to create my own Butterworth or Bessel crystal
filters, and perhaps add a rate of change type of audio noise clipper. I
have also ordered some transverter boards from W1GHZ that are designed
specifically for putting an FT-817 on 222 that I plan to modify for a
the RF boards for other bands for the Hohentwiel. The W1GHZ boards don't
have quite the NF of the bare Hohentwiel receiver, but have at least a
great a strong signal handling capability. It will take some lead
stretching to fit the 432, and higher Toko filters to the foot print of
the 222 filters. The W1GHZ boards have a more versatile transmit side
than the Hohentwiel board that uses discrete transistors.
I'll know more in a few months after I make the collection all work
(after developing the capability of assembling surface mount parts).
