Subject: [Kenwood] SM-220/230 Questions
> Hello list,
> I have a few questions regarding the "Station Monitor" scopes (SM-220,
> SM-230) from the TS-940/950 era, mostly about the scope portion.
> How do they work? Does it take the IF output from the radio and display
it?
Yes, the 8 mhz IF is used to display the spectrum immediately above and
below your operating frequency. Normal oscilloscope displays operate
in the time/duration mode the pan-adapter in the 2220/230 displays
in time/frequency.
> Can you do the same thing with a plain old oscilloscope?
Yes, but you would need something like the pan-adapter to make it
work.

Similar, but in my opinion, a little better. It is my understanding that the
Icom radios allow you to see a one time sweep, where the 220 has
a continuous sweep that operates full time.
> How wide can you sweep?
Either +-20 khz or +-100khz.
> I just got a TS-940 (what a big, beautiful radio). Can I use either the
> SM-220 or the SM-230?
Not sure if they are interchangeable, but the SM-220 was for the 940
and the SM-230 was for the 950. Different IF's I think, but not too sure.
> Do you know of a web page that might describe the functions/features of
the
> scopes?
No, but possibly a manual might be available on line somewhere?

Hopefully someone better qualified than me will fill in the blanks, Roy.
