Hello Tim.
This is a common problem with the TM-241A, but not a major one to repair (30
minutes).
I bought my Kenwood TM-241A new in 1992 and except for the display problem
it's worked great. The problem with mine (It would show every function on
the display that was there to show) was caused by the faulty connector between
the display board and the board behind it. I never replaced the connector
but i did have to re-solder it in place (it came completely free of the board)
and/or clean it several times through the years. The last time it acted up
i made sure it was soldered well to the board (i think there must have been a
problem with the original solder and with all my re-moving and re-soldering
the original solder is probably gone by now) and then i took a needle with a
bent tip and carefully scraped the contacts of the connector and i've never
had a problem since, and that was 2 or 3 years ago or more!
I would certainly be willing to buy another one if anything happened to this
one that couldn't be repaired.
VE1KRE.......Keith.
