RE: [Kenwood] PSK31 and sound card sampling rate.Look under =
start/program/accessories/entertainment. You should find "sound =
recorder" there.

There might also be a Compaq app somewhere under programs that could =
adjust soundcard features/parameters.

The "Sounds" selection in the "control panel" folder might have controls =
for the soundcard that include sample rate.

You might also check the properties (right click) of the "my computer" =
icon, and select "device manager".=20
Select properties for your soundcard and see if there are any =
adjustments there.

  Cyberia, (you did not give a name...)=20

    > No what I meant is that the WINPSK.DLL programs do not display the =
correct=20
    characters.=20
    > Where as the DigiPan does. DigiPan sets the sound card to sample =
at=20
    11025hz.=20
    > The WINPSK.DLL is supposed to set the sample rate at 8000hz. But I =
think=20
    it's not.=20
    > The sound card is stuck at 11025 sample rate.=20

    Yes John, as I said, it seems you want to know how to manually set =
the=20
    soundcard to 8000 SPS instead of 11025 to see if this corrects the =
problem=20
    with the characters in WINPSK. Is this not the case? I must be =
having a=20
    flashback (or perhaps a senior moment). :-)=20

    Yes. But, I also want to proove that the WINPSK.DLL is etting or not =
setting the=20
    sample rate to 8000hz.=20

    What soundcard are you using, and what app are you using to adjust =
it's=20
    input level?=20

    The sound is built into the mother board to a Compaq Presario 5220. =
The=20
    sound chip is the ESS1869. The sound driver is a ESS/Compaq driver.=20

    > The reason I think this is so is that the=20
    > xtal oscilator to the sound chip (ESS 1869) is 14.31953 vs =
14.31818Mhz or=20
    +90ppm=20
    > error. This is not much of an error.=20

    I agree, as I had previously suggested - a clock rate error of this=20
    magnitude probably has no effect.=20

    > But when I receive a PSK31 signal with WINPSKse=20
    > I get errors of -5000ppm to -7000ppm which is huge!!!!=20

    I'm not familiar with WINPSK. Does it display error rates expressed =
in PPM=20
    or are you calculating this from something??=20
    Yes, the WINPSK.DLL can display sample rate errors in PPM. I get =
-5000 to -7000ppm=20
    error.=20

    > Also 60% of the displayed text=20
    > id garbled.=20

    Heh, heh... funny that a typo popped up in that sentence. :-)=20
    Oooops!=20

    > I think, but again I'm not sure, the sound card is sampling at =
11025hz and=20
    not=20
    > 8000hz. But how do I prove this?=20

    Make a recording of the received signal in wav format, and look at =
the=20
    properties of the resulting file?=20
    How do I do this?=20
    In fact, you might use Windows' sound recorder to force the card to =
the=20
    bitrate you want. Perhaps it will stay there afterward if WINPSK is =
not=20
    explicitly configuring it.=20
    Is this bundled with Win98?=20

    For what it's worth (this thread has been rather convoluted) - =
Windows sound=20
    recorder on *this* machine shows the exact list of available sample =
rates as=20
    I indicated in a previous post as being useable by my soundcard. If =
you=20
    don't now know what rates are available on your card, doing this =
will show=20
    you that info as well. Again, this may be OS dependent.=20
    How do I evoke the Windows Sound Recorder. This is an app I never =
used before.=20
    This may be useful. At least I can see if the sound system can =
support 8000hz sample rate.=20
