 Message from Randy, Schulze:

********************

While driving home from work Monday Evening, I was flagged down by another
motorist who excitedly asked if I was a ham. The elderly lady informed me
that her late husband was a Ham, John Tull, KDØJL and that they had resided
down the street. John had passed away in 2009.

She asked me to stop by the house where she and her husband had lived. She
was moving to a smaller home in the area, and found a few more amateur
radio items that had not yet been sold or claimed that she wanted me to
take a look at them. I stopped by the following afternoon, where she
presented me with a box full of ferrite beads. It seems John was very good
at fixing RFI issues in the neighborhood, so the neighbors would not go
after the local ham. She explained that most of the RFI issues John
resolved had nothing to do with amateur radio, but came from other sources.
John built most of his equipment and accessories, and apparently
manufactured some of his own ferrite beads as Mrs Tull presented me with a
large, heavy jar with what appeared to be finely ground iron powder. I told
her I would check around to see if anyone has a need for the powder,
perhaps for an iron deficiency, but I purchased the ferrite beads. Mrs Tull
also gave me a stack of unissued certificates to the Order of the Sly Fox
of DX. I did a little research, and it appears that John Tull, KDØJL of
Kansas City was the creator and originator of this award. If you do a
Google search on his call sign, you'll find a few nice articles from some
of the recipients of the award. The certificate reads:

==========

"Coming well recommended and bearing a signal of good report, it gives us
great pleasure to welcome and bestow upon you the coveted Sly Fox Award.
"Your DX Operations have demonstrated to all the ingenuity and skill of a
World Class DX Station. We wish more Amateurs had your passion for
International Friendship and Understanding while working DX. "Now you are
officially a Sly Fox. We know your clever and crafty ways will inspire
others in the perseverance of DX.”

==========

Mrs Tull went on to tell me that while John was a very avid amateur radio
enthusiast, he was not involved in any amateur radio club per se, although
he was very active with his Masonic Lodge. I was wondering if anyone might
be able to tell us more about John Tull, KDØJL and the Sly Fox Award…

This also came to light again when Randy was contacted by Jorge Clementi,
LU9MBY, who had received one of John Tull’s Sly Fox certificates. Randy
has a stack of unfinished Sly Fox certificates, which, depending on Jorge’s
wishes, he may ship to Jorge for him to revive the award and start issuing
certificates.
