I received Alpha's latest newsletter today, and they have modified their
position on older amplifier service. They now say they will service an amp
for ten years after end of production. The newsletter says they will
service the 8100 and 87A. They will also now provide help finding someone
to repair their other older amplifiers. These changes came about after so
many customers complained about their new service policy.
The changed policy is now on their webpage.

Larry,
This is just a long shot, but it sounds like a microprocessor or soft ware
problem in the control circuit. In other words it is losing its brains from
time to time. Gary, N0GW, and I have discussed your problem and the
processor can be replaced but would need to be re-programmed and only Alpha
would have the software. You might be able to find a controller board and
replace the entire board. Sorry I can not be of more help.

I'm using an Alpha 8100 driven by a Yaesu FT2000. The amp requires @50
watts to obtain 1500 from the amp. It operates in Class AB2 using (2)
4CX800As. The control circuit will fault to standby or off (hard fault)
when an unsafe operation occurs. The fault type codes are reported in the
amp telemetry data via the serial/usb port on the back of the amp. Alpha no
longer support the 8100 among several other and will not answer questions
effective 12-01-2013. In November when I talked with them they suggested
the following: check (3) specific fuses (type/rating--checked okay. Pull
one tube out and go through startup procedure--check fine; do same with
other tube--checked fine. Put both back in and operated okay for three
weeks and started same problem over again. Included video of startup
procedure on my amp and will last about 150 seconds (normal) and you much
watch all. Would like to get this fixed...suggestions welcomed...Larry
