Thanks to all of you who responded with ideas to help solve my computer problem. Unfortunately, none of them worked.  I have worked all day to try and fix it with little  or no luck. W0ZAP's  suggestion got me back control of my email system, but the 3 corrupted files remain in the inbox and can't be deleted. I did update lots of files and streamline the operation of the computer in several other areas as a result of some of the remedies.
