End of Summer Greetings to all,
It has been an uncomfortably hot and dry summer, unfortunately
not very enticing weather for museum visitors. Regardless, there were
various fine activities held there, a couple of which were great radio
events. Congratulations to all who took part. A special thanks to
volunteers who helped in any way with the success of tower straightening
in
June, and recently of the Robinhood-like use of bow and arrow that put a
line over the TOP most tower structure for hauling up our new 160 M
dipole.
That archer is Don Warkentien WDEW. Good work, Don. That antenna is in
shipment now and soon we will complete the job of installation of the
W9BSP
Club station which will be along side the famous original one. When
complete, you MEMO folks are invited to be the ambassadors of good will
for
the Museum while running the on-going Special Event Station. Even though
the Museum hours will formally end on the 30th of this month, we will
enjoy
many hours of station operation afterwards. Our Equipment is various. To
start off we will have an ICOM [rice box] and later after some
restoration
we add an authentic vintage trio consisting of Hallicrafters[ Marshalls
favorite] SX101A Rec., HT32 am-cw-ssb- Rig, and HT41 Ampl. Our thanks
goes
to Larry Rosine WOG, our OT AMer - Secretary. He brought the trio home
from an East coast hamfest recently, and is now sanitizing the lot. If
you
think the news is good so far, hold on to your nickers.
Beginning the first of October, I will assume the job of Ensor
Museum
Director. Little did I think some volunteer effort there would open this
door to us but it shows where things can lead unexpectedly. I am excited
for several reasons. My ongoing volunteerism now is rewarded with pay,
but
even more important, is the ability to channel the relationship of the
Ensor Farmsite & Museum to closer ties with amateur radio both
historically
and in the present theme of what is going on in amateur radio. Please
stop and think what we have right here in our back yard, so to speak. We
just recently gained acceptance as a Kansas Historic Place, and
nomination
to National Historic Site. If we tell the great story of Marshall and
Loretta Ensors achievements, complete with artifacts, to draw attention
to
the Museum we can only expect good things to come of it. We need to
consider in what ways we can connect the Museum with local and national
ham
radio energy, and events. Your suggestions are welcome. Mail me or phone
913 681 0373. I'll be working for the Museum, and with Amateur Radio.
To start the ball rolling, we are going to offer something all hams love
to
take part in. Beginning
Saturday October 4th, and the first Saturday morning of each month of
agreeable weather,( 50 deg F. or above and DRY), the Museum opens the 8
acre grounds for a SELL and SWAP event. A traditional HAMFEST it is NOT.
We
cannot have any commercial vendors.(Museum policy.) What we can do is
load
those things we wish to sell or trade into our vehicle and haul them to
the
Museum where we enjoy lots of attractive space to show our odds and
ends
of gear. Show stuff in the vehicle, on the ground, or on tables we bring
along. The S&S Hours will be 9AM till Noon. [ The full Museum will only
be
open if I can provide tour guides. They will be on duty 1PM till 5 PM,
June
thru. Sept. ] My apologies for short notice, but if you miss this one
there
will be many more.
Needed: a volunteer 2M talk in station for the first event on 10-04-03.
Please contact me right away, so I can add the info to a notice going
out
to many local clubs. Be on from 8AM on.
Lastly, I'd like to introduce new member Joe Wright, KBVRG. Joe is a
young man now retired for many years and a graduate of the Coast Guard
where he served many years as Radio Op. Joe held a license early on and
just returned to amateur radio in recent years. But you have to hand it
to
Joe. He has managed to work up to Extra class in a short time. I know
him
from many breakfasts with the Santa Fe Trails ARC group, KSKS. Welcome
Joe.
