A contest with a solar surprise! I'm glad the bands recovered so quickly...
Great to hear and work so many locals - John, Steve, Rebecca & Dave, Tom,
Charlie, Marshall.
SS CW is my all-time favorite contest. First effort was a multi-op at age 14
in 1959...at John Brosnahan's house (KN0UTX - now W0UN) with Russ, K0VXU.
The SS ran for 2 full consecutive weekends, both modes at the same time! As
Novices, we were limited to 75 watts and crystal control of the transmitter
frequency....We struggled along in the Novice bands for both weeekends, and
netted a whopping 73 Q's for our entire effort. Needless to say, we all
upgraded to general class within the next month or two - but had to wait
another 2 years for drivers' licenses!
Missed only NT this year....didn't hear Jay at all, but saw in the 3830
notes that he had been on for a bit. I wonder how the solar situation
affected him.
Worked PAC very early in the contest, and AK answered my CQ. All the
semi-rare sections seemed to fall into place - NE, ND, SD, MS, lots of SF.
Went to bed at 2:30 a.m. missing four sections WY, MT, VO1 and NT. Struggled
to work VO1MP in a morning pileup on 10, then worked at least two other NLs
during the day. WY and MT both called me, but that NT hung like a lone
dingleberry on the wanted mult screen...I guess if they were all easy if
wouldn't be as much fun.
Thanks for the Q's! See you all next time...73 Bill K0VBU
