AE9B Relay for this message on another reflector.
Sounds neat.. any 2M Dxers in the club?
Hi folks-
I have recieved several off-line messages asking me
for more info about my post involving meteor-scatter
QSO's on 2m for the Leonids shower. Here are the gory
details:
1) The peak of the shower will be Tuesday morning
around 1000z- around 1200Z (4AM-6AM). HOwever, there
will be increased meteor-scatter condition all night
long. Many weak-signal VHF-ers will be on beginning at
sundown Monday night (approx 2300z Monday night) and
keep going well past Tuesday's sunrise.
2) Most activity is on SSB and CW (not much FM). You
will need a 2m rig that does SSB and a
horizontally-polarized 2m antenna. While bigger is
better, modest equipment will produce suprising
results. 50w and a 5 or 6-el yagi will make many good
QSO's.
3) Due to such great conditions, the standard protocol
for working meteor-scatter will probably be put adide.
However, if things get thin, be sure to brush up on
the standard protocol. There is a "proper" way things
get coordinated. The main this is to be sure to set
your watch EXACTLY to GMT; there are "hand-offs" that
occur every 15 secondsa using SSB on meteor-scatter.
For a complete overview of VHF processes, go to our
DN95 grid DXpedition site at:
http://www.cahcare.com/dn95/ref.html
Be sure to look at the grid map found there, as you
will need to know the grid square you are in (EN45,
EM59, etc).
Hope this helps. 73 and see you all very early on
Tuesday morning.
