Last night I listened to members of the NCCC strategizing about and then
holding a Mini-10 meter contest for member practice and logging program
check out.
One of the NCCC members is planning to put a rig and antenna in a boat
(cruiser) and go out past the 12 mile limit so that NCCC will be able to
work that station as N6IP/MM2 (region 2 maritime mobile -- another
multiplier). They found that none of the logging programs was able to handle
this entry in a fashion to use the multiplier in the score. That means that
Cabrillo files will miss it too. They decided to log it as N6IP/MM and then
sort out after the contest how to get the value from the multiplier into the
overall score.
The MM2 station will be on shortly after the start of the contest around
28.525MHz 0r 26.545MHz whichever is the best frequency. If we find the
station it will work us too, there is no plan to limit the multiplier to
NCCC. I am passing this along as one bit of arcane information that may be
of interest to MWA members.
A second bit of information regards their plan to spend significant time
harvesting contacts from the Novice sub band. They view this as especially
fertile ground after the 'easy' CW contacts have been made.
A third bit of information was their plan to ask multipliers they encounter
on phone to move and give them a CW contact. They decided that moving the
multiplier station to 28.250-28.290 would get them to a place where they
could use CW and not have to worry about CQ TEST QRM. It also should be
easier for the multiplier to go there and then return to the SSB
frequencies.
Not sure if any of this can be used by the MWA team, but I thought I should
report since I am the only MWA "mole' here in the Western U.S.
I was most impressed with the fact that these guys seem to get on about one
or two nights prior to each contest so that new members can get operating
tips. It permits everyone to get some idea of what the exchange will be
like, test the integration of their radio and computer and make sure that
their logging program is going to function properly when they use it in the
contest. Past comments on this MWA reflector suggest that it might not be
entirely wasted time for MWA folks if we did something similar prior to each
contest next year. I think the check out of the logging programs and testing
the computer-radio connections alone would be good. We have sufficient
diversity in logging programs used so that a problem could be discussed
knowledgeably and maybe even resolved before the start of the contest. The
mini-contest they run lasts 20 minutes and then they regroup and discuss
what they observed and ask questions about their problems. It seemed like a
very good Contest Club activity to me as I listened.
