I remember because when I graduated I went home and got married on May 11. The clock is striking midnight as I write this. It is our 57th wedding anniversary. K6NCG and ET 'A' school may have been the best time of my life, and I have had a fantastic life. I still have friends I met there. I hope you find friends you met while there. Life just seems to get sweeter as I age. Blessings, Dave, K4TO CTM2 On Sun, May 10, 2020 at 9:34 PM Orv Beach wrote: > Just joined this mailing list. Message-ID: I posted this on my facebook page. I also wanted to share it with you. 57 years ago last week, May 3, 1963, I graduated from the U.S. Navy's Electronic Technician 'A" school. It was an intense, 38 week, 8 hours per day school on everything electronic. I graduated first in my class. That sounds like bragging, and I suppose it is, to some extent. But as a result, I was the only one of the 138 members in my graduating class that was allowed to change my rate from Electronic Technician to Communication Technician. It meant that, instead of long months at sea, I had shore duty with the super secret Naval Security group. That was so important because the week after I graduated, I married my sweetheart, Marian. We enjoyed a two and a half year honeymoon in Japan. It was a magical time in our lives. Today we celebrate our 57th wedding anniversary. I am Blessed, with a capital BLESS. And then I added this comment: There were a few reasons I was able to finish ahead of 137 others. I had two years of engineering college. Most of the others were fresh out of high school and had never seen the advanced math or any of the equipment we were learning. Second, I had been a ham radio operator for 5 years and had built stuff similar to much of the equipment they were teaching us about. And lastly, my chief competitor for class honors, another two year engineering college guy, discovered beer in the enlisted mens club and decided he didn't need to study quite so hard. He did me a real favor. :-) Have a great Day ---- Dave From mike at hammerberg.net Mon May 11 11:26:21 2020 From: mike at hammerberg.net (Michael Hammerberg) Date: Mon, 11 May 2020 11:26:21 -0400 Subject: [K6NCG] Celebrate! I had a private email from another CT friend of mine. He also went to CT from ET and was first in class. Interesting thing about his story was that ET was his last choice behind two Aviation Electronics Technician rates. His reason? The other rates had more schooling and he wanted as much training as possible. This was in 1960-61 time frame. He graduated from TI before I did and I didn't meet him until I got to NSGA Kami Seya, Japan. It survived up until just past 2005 when I took these pics. The building was demolished by 1999. Sometime within the next few years after i took these, the tower base was dug out and demolished. Here?s a link to the location for Google Maps in your browser: https://goo.gl/maps/3T77UCnMVjU6mmcg7 I really wanted to preserve this block somehow, but they got it behind a fence and I can?t find the pieces. I was pretty excited to see the callsigns in the cement. I wish I had gotten more pictures. Cheers and 73!
