Dave got me to admit it.  Yes, being a "deck ape" wasn't the happiest thing I ever did (90 daze of messcooking thrown in for good measure), but I used (and use) those skills to this day.  Doing underway replenishments at 0300 was very, very dangerous, and I owe my very existance to BM2 Corbin (who was killed by a failed pelican hook, trying to secure boats during a typhoon in the PI), who noticing me being pulled off my feet by an unreleased phone & distance line (still attached to the DD that was pulling away from us), grabbed the line & his knife, and cut the line and cord in one swipe... clearly preventing me from being "processed" by a bulwark chock.

They are indeed, the "sailor's sailor".
