Hey Bob thanks for that aerial, very nice. My 38k attachment didn't come through but it agrees with your attachment exactly.
the "blue dot" I referred to is just a little south of the "ghostly" outline - I'll see if I can shrink the file-size a little and try again.

Bill,
It was just a bit north of that location. It's hard to tell because
almost all the landmarks have disappeared. But assuming that 9th street
hasn't changed, it was just a bit further up north. Back then Avenue of
the Palms (the main road onto the island) made a slight jog inland at
9th St.
Here is an aerial view of the area in question taken in 1968:

Building 318 is right in the center. It is about 3/4 of the way up from
the jog in Ave of the Palms to where the road turns right just north of
the shack. Historic Aerials is a cool web site. You can play with the
year and zoom in and out.
In the next few days I'm going to be posting a web site that has photos
of the ham shack, people, views from the tower, etc. taken when I was
there in 1969. One of those photos is a view to the south taken from
atop the tower and you can clearly see 9th St and Ave of the Palms, and
the lay of the land thereabouts.
