To TC Dailey and all,
The old shack (Bldg. 127) was located just northwest of Avenue Palms and 9th streets on what is now Perimeter Road. If you use Google Earth or Vitrual Earth you can see the “bump” in the shoreline jetties where the shack once stood. The ‘60s photos from <www.qsl.net/k6ncg> are great and bring back many memories of the old shack.
The color photos from Dan Withers, WM7W website: <www.ussstoddard.org/k6ncg.htm> are even better and show the Collins S-Line station and a K6NCG club meeting in the old shack, plus a view down Avenue Palms from atop the tower. Thanks Dan for making these available! I spent many fun-filled hours at that S-Line desk. If we had lowered that window above the desk, it would have given a perfect view of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
I was on TI from May, 1965 until March, 1966 and joined K6NCG 6/65 and graduated from ET-A school 3/66. I just missed knowing Dan Withers. In the Fall of ’65 we took town the beam from the 105’ tower for cleaning and reinstalled it. I didn’t mind the height so much, but the wind up there was horrific!
