Yes, Desmond,

The building (shown on 60's B&W photos) WAS set back from the shoreline
(covered with large sized stones). I was surrounded by chain link fence,
and was just up from "Surfside Six" which was a Radarman School (RD-A) site.
The RD students would often pull "guard" watches at Surfside Six, and when
the fog came in, it could be pretty "brisk" out there... not to mention,
kind of spooky and lonely. If you look at the picture on the website,
showing a couple of later guys working on the tower sections (new one), you
can see the SS-6 tower in the background.

In about August of 1962, I got my Novice at the old QTH, and a couple of
those ne'r-do-wells (who went on to become Limited Duty Officers) took me
out INTO the water (but, not very far), had me sit in a washtub, and
convinced me that I was to be floated out into the bay, then brought back -
I was admonished to SIT VERY STILL... I damned sure DID. It's been a few
years since then, and neither of the perps remembers it, but I vividly
recall the peanut butter and mustard on my face, not to mention the nautical
adventure.

Look in the color pics, and you'll see one with several guys examining the
new tower parts that had arrived, just before I left for San Diego.
