[K6NCG] Navcomsta Guam

While AT the NAVCOMMSTA GUAM - Finegayen, I operated out of KG6AAY 
(on-base).  I was talking with an old Guamanian guy who worked as a 'sand 
crab', and he told me of a rotatable rhombic on 2182 (international lifeboat 
freq), that used to be powered by a little steam engine.  Apparently, when 
they wanted it "swung", they'd ring this other old fellow up on a improvised 
field-telephone, and tell him which bearing to turn it to - had signs with 
numbers painted on them, like "270" and such.  The typhoon of '62 wiped the 
island clean, and I'm sure that's where it went - never could find anybody 
else on-island who could verify the story.

There was a story about KG6AAY (All American Yankee) in QST a few years 
back, but it covered only the 50's when the writer was there.  Officially, 
it was called the "CORAL ISLE AMATEUR RADIO CLUB", and I still keep in touch 
with some of the former members.

Speaking of the Receiver Site - it was not unusual for Soviet "fishing 
trawlers" to be seen offshore, doing ELINT work (Electronic Intell).  It was 
also told to me, that Russian cigarette packages were sometimes found in 
Agana bars, during cleanup.  It was an interesting time.
