Happy New Year back at ya Bill and to the whole alumni lurking out there!
Funny you should ask about 2008 Field Day on the Island.
Desmond (KC6VHG) and I were just discussing that possibility a week or two
ago. (Desmond is a current Treasure Island resident)
I would certainly like to see a field day effort mounted soon, while there
are still some of the old buildings left on the island. Our history there
is disappearing fast. If it is not being lost because of some sort of
redevelopment, it is going up in flames due to transients/homeless trying to
keep warm.
There are some logistical problems to deal with:
1. there are no hotels on the island
2. the area where the 1960's ham shack was has been redeveloped to housing,
therefore unavailable
3. the location of the 1970's shack is with in an area leased to the Job
Corps, therefore unavailable
4. the management of the island is under the control of the City of San
Francisco and their attendant whims
5. for any RV'ers out there, we may be able to get permits for a number of
RV's to stay on the island for the event
I think we can count on the facilities of the Treasure Island Yacht Club,
limited that they are, to base our operations out of.
>From the radio perspective:
1. we have no 'in-place' towers on which to mount antennas
2. the parking area in front of the TIYC should be available for us to set
up, maybe?
3. the TIYC is located just outside the main gate at Clipper Cove, so we
have a good salt water ground plane
4. depending on where we set up, there may be shore power or we may need a
generator
None of these problems are insurmountable, but we need to have some idea of
how many alumni would be interested in attending Treasure Island Field Day
2008 so we can tailor our approach the City and their management people that
run the island. If there are only a few, we would take one direction. If
there are many the project gets more complicated, but is still do-able...
One way or another, Desmond and I intend to try to be on the air for field
day, we would really like to see some of the alumni out there to join up
with us and to awaken Kilowatt 6 Navy Coffee Grounds!
IF anyone has ideas or suggestions on how to pull this off, drop us an email
or post to the K6NCG reflector.
Once again,
Happy New Year to All and hope to see some (many!) of you at field day this
year.
