[K6NCG] Special Event Station during Fleet Week.

Hi Desmond,

That could be fun; there is just about no better place than T. I. to see the
Fleet week activities it is a great excuse for folks to return to San
Francisco for old time sake.

More importantly is Treasure Island itself:

The navy returned the island to the City of San Francisco about 10 years
ago. The transition to civilian use is taking a lot longer than initially
expected. There is a small "itinerant community" on the island hanging on
while the transfer works itself out. When that day comes the plan is to
basically bulldoze everything except buildings 1, 2, and 3. The rest of the
buildings will be history.

Some of the buildings already have suffered damage from fires and neglect,
but mainly the fact that they were meant to be torn down years ago for the
redevelopment.

The remaining buildings are either being used for housing, commercial
enterprises, filming (much of Nash Bridges was shot on the Island) and the
Job Corps has a big presence there. Many of the old training buildings from
my era (63-64) are either boarded up, torn down, or burned out. Most of the
fires in burned out ones are suspected to have been started by homeless
squatters camping in them. So sad.

The 12th Naval District offices near the entrance was used as the Berlin
Airport in one of the Indiana Jones movies and is now pretty much used by
San Francisco for offices to manage the Island. Both of the Ham Shacks that
I was aware of are gone. The one on the west edge of the Island used in the
60's was an old RADIAC calibration building before we got it and is
completely gone, concrete slab, fence, building, and all. It was replaced
with base housing that is now being used by the city for rental housing.
Were there ever any other buildings that housed K6NCG?

The one that followed in the 70's was in the B School barracks as I recall.
That building is leveled and only parts of the foundation remain. What does
remain however, is the concrete base for the tower with the legs cut off
flush. Etched into it at the pour was "K6NCG forever" and some other calls
of the era. I mention both of these locations because they are/were both
perishable history. One has already been built over completely and I expect
the other will be gone within the next few years though I don't have
anything to give me a timetable. Developers in the bay area, as everywhere,
are lusting after real estate where ever they can find it. If ever you want
to revisit your history at Treasure Island, you must do so soon. It is
quickly fading into the dust bin of history.

I am fortunate enough to live in the bay area in Hercules, home of Hercules
Blasting Powder in the early days. This affords me relatively easy access
to Treasure Island so I have already gotten my "fix" of memories from the
old days. For those of you who have not yet been able to do that, make your
plans soon.

For the rest of you Alumni:

Does anyone recall if the K6NCG ham shack was ever established in another
building on the Island?

When was it first established as a club?

Did it ever have another call beside K6NCG?

I would like to also thank Desmond (KC6VHG), though he is not an alumni, is
a techie, an avid supporter of K6NCG, and lives on the island, for putting
together our Field Day effort and being the impetus behind getting K6NCG
back on the air and in the either this year. Also, I would like to thank
Mike Mitchell (W6RW) for preserving K6NCG as a club call by establishing the
Treasure Island Alumni Radio Association and jumping through the needed FCC
hoops to get it renewed in time for us to use the call in time for Field
Day.

Now having organized all of the preceding electrons in my rambling way, let
me wrap up with the following:

1.. If we are ever going to do a T. I. Alumni reunion at Treasure Island,
it better be in the next few years.
2.. Fleet week would be an interesting time to do it.
3.. Failing that, Field Day next year is probably the most ideal time and
if we get enough operators, we should be able to make a very respectable
showing. You all remember what a great radio location T. I. is!
