Oregon and New Jersey I think are the only 'mandatory attendant' states. 
Full employment for the unemployable is my sense, though I could be wrong.
We just went through that in Oregon with our motorcycles.  We rode from the 
Bay Are to Tacoma and back a couple of weeks ago.  Understanding that most 
riders are very particular about their bikes, the attendants in Oregon would 
run you credit card and hand you the nozzle and run off to the next 
customer.  If you are in a car, they pump.  Clearly it's too dangerous for 
the mere mortal to handle a gas nozzle.
