Correction, the total application process is around $485. Please disregard my references to State of California corporation application fees. They are incorrect.

  Hi Joy,

The amount requested is to pay state and federal filing fees required by
state and federal agencies when filing the application(s). Retaining
professional help (aside from pro-bono) is not part of the appeal. The
State of California previously refunded application fees to corporations
upon obtaining a 501-C3 status, but believe that policy has been changed.
My understanding is the minimum filing fee to establish a State of
California corporation is $485, and there are additional, smaller fees for
related filings. If you can help with the process, and/or know a way around
filing fees, please let me know!

  Bill

Why the $$$. Our local tennis league recently incorporated and then received
non-profit status without need for professional help. The guidelines for
  same
are on the Secretary of State's web page and there are many web sites you
  would
find helpful. No need for something fancy. Just simple articles of
incorporation. Get corporate status and then apply as a non profit.

  Subject: [K6BW] Nonprofit Application Fund

We are proceeding with a nonprofit application for the Hamilton Wireless
Association, the organization that supports CERT Radio and Navy-Marine
Corps. MARS (and the Hamilton Clubhouse at Building 549). If we can get 20
donations of $30.00 or more, we can file the application. We need your
  support. Can you help?

Please send a check written to:

  Hamilton Wireless Association
  PO Box 150635
  San Rafael, CA 94915-0635

Indicate the check is for the Nonprofit fund.

Please also consider joining the Hamilton Wireless Association. Regular
  annual dues are $25.00.

  Thank you!

  Sincerely,

  Bill Smith
