Here's an interesting page, if you have extra time.  Am not sure you will learn anything, but the following URL is a database of equipment which lists CAP (Civil Air Patrol) compliance.  Most Amateur equipment does not meet the strict standards, particularly with respect to frequency stability established by the Government a couple of years ago.  The source might be interesting to browse through if for no other reason than to familiarize oneself with available commercial equipment.
