I have a couple of simple tips I used as a novice.

I listened to LOTS of CW on a reveiver- had it on all the time and just got used to the sound and feel of it.
I had no idea what was being sent but got used to listening. After a while I was able to pick out a letter or so.
First thing I learned was CQ because it was sent so often and had a very distinct beat.

The other thing was, I would read any big sign on the street and spell it out to myself in CW.
When I would drive to San Fran., I would convert the hwy. signs to CW in my head. You don't have to do them all (hee hee- or you'll go nuts and get in an accident ) just a few every day.
Practice it EVERY day. A little or a lot but do it every day.

Soon, the characters will become second nature to you and you wont have to think so hard about each individual character.
sort of like learning to use a typewriter.

OH, also, I learned the individual characters by having my wife use "flash" cards- with the dits and dahs on the back.

Just a few tips that helped me.....
Hope this helps
