A correction! Mr. Halligan's call was 1-UL. (Where did 1-UH come from?)

Bill

Do you know who Bill Halligan is? (see below) 1-UH (Bill's FCC callsign)
used to write a Ham column in a Boston, MA newspaper.

Here is an excerpt from one of his "Little Personals" column. The receiver
might be a one-tube Reinartz regenerative type using a UV-2000 tube. 1-UH
was licensed to operate at a maximum power of 10 watts. His transmitter was
a ACCW type (oscillator operating directly with AC power!).

If you enjoy the excerpt below, you might find the entire article at
Electric Radio interesting.

"The beveridge antenna seems to be all the go. Many fellows shun it, or
rather pass it by as something beyond their field of accomplishment. But
according to Sheldon Heap, 1-BDT, 1-XAR, of Atlantic, and George Etter,
1-AJA, of Dorchester, there’s really nothing to it.

For the benefit of those who know not what the Beveridge is it might
be said it is giving all the appearances of being the one thing plus a good
receiver which brings radio as near the ideal as is possible. For 200 meter
work it consists of a 650-foot length of wire as nearly on a straight line
as possible. The free end has a resistance of 250 ohms in series with the
ground.

The antenna should be about seven feet from the ground, but 1-AJA has
his run along a fence which is less than five feet high. George uses cotton
covered bell wire which is simply tacked along the fence. This type of
antenna is, of course, directional, but it covers a range 15 degrees either
side of the free end. For distance work this would mean a considerable range
in one direction. We should be glad to hear from fans who have experience
with the Beveridge for broadcast work. [3/4/24]"

Bill Halligan was the founder of the "Hallicrafters" company, Chicago, Ill.
