There's always more than one way to skin a cat.  If you don't like to melt
solder, you might like to test your favorite circuit design with a circuit
simulator.  The referenced software will allow you to set up a schematic,
then apply virtual electricity and observe the result.

Sorry, it doesn't show what 1000 volts at 100 amps does to a 10 ohm
resistor, but you have likely seen smoke let out of circuits before, anyway.
