Based on the absolutely rotten conditions (no short skip on 4 MHz
through-out No. Calif. at 6:00pm tonight), DX should be great.

Subject: [K6BW] Low band DXing at K6BW

There were some interesting low band DX conditions
last night. Early in the evening, the guys in the far
northwest were working Europe directly over the pole.
Those of us further south could not hear a peep.

Later in the evening, as sunrise began passing over
Eastern Europe, signals began to skew out from the
East and began to be copyable.

For the first time ever from California, I worked
Europe on 160M. It started with DF2PY in Germany
@0400Z, who maybe was peaking at 449 (long, deep QSB).
Later, I worked a very loud SV3RF (Greece) at 0550Z
who was peaking 569 and was louder than some of the
guys who couldn't hear and were calling over top of
him. I found out later that OH3XR in northern Finland
heard me working the DF2, and commented that I was
quite loud. Unfortunately I never heard him.

On 80M, conditions were even better. I suprised DK3FW
(Germany again) as the only West Coast station who he
could hear. I also worked 9H1ZA (Malta) through a
huge pileup, HB9CIP (Switzerland), and F5IN (France).
All these stations were coming through from the East.

I will continue to work on the receiving antennas
because I feel there is much room for improvement
there. I think the European Beverage is pointed too
far north for example. I'd like to hear what the guys
in OR and WA are working as well.

Fun night! I'll be back on tonight for European
Sunrise (8:30-11PM local).

73, Dave N2NL
