Here is a follow-up from Ed Ellers, though the "50 year" event doesn't hold
much excitement in my book..
ABC merged with United Paramount Theaters in 1953, so for a long time they
recognized that date as the beginning of ABC in its present form. (Of
course they were taken over by Capital Cities in the 1980s, and Capital
Cities-ABC was taken over by Disney in the 1990s, but I guess they're stuck
with the 1953 date since they had used it for so long.) Actually the Blue
radio network goes back even farther than 1928, as it was founded in the
mid-1920s by RCA, and simply called the "Radio Corporation Chain."
A thought occurs to me -- Since UPT took over ABC, it could easily have been
renamed the United Paramount Network, or UPN. :-)
