While not contest related this illustrates very well one very useful purpose still in use today of shortwave with also a bit of tradition and nostalgia. Today is the once a year BBC Antarctica Midwinter Broadcast. This is a 30 minute broadcast from the BBC to people posted at the British Antarctic stations. If you've never heard the broadcast it's well worth listening too as it turns these few shortwave BBC frequencies into a cheerful small town sounding broadcast to the scientist and support staff in Antarctica with recorded salutations and well wishes from their families back in the UK.
The broadcasts starts at 2130 UTC today, June 21, from these BBC transmitter sites and frequencies:
5985 kHz Woofferton
7360 kHz Ascension
9890 kHz Woofferton
