All,

After the meeting Monday, we discussed pushing out links for training for
those of you who had the interest in preliminary training in incident
management for the purpose of becoming more active in RACES/ARES.

FEMA provides a comprehensive list of independent study classes that are
available for anyone to take. The classes are web-based, with an exam
thereafter. Successful completion results in a certificate of completion.
Some of these courses (ICS 100,200,700, and 800) are even requirements for
certain paid positions in the field. But for those looking to volunteer for
RACES/ARES:

First, you need to obtain a FEMA SID if you do not have one:

https://cdp.dhs.gov/FEMASID

It is generally self-explanatory, and if you have any questions about the
process please reach out.

One granted a SID, you can take classes from the IS list:

https://training.fema.gov/is/crslist.aspx?all=true

At a bare minimum, the suggested courses for RACES/ARES are ICS 100 and
700, with the addition of 200 and 800 recommended. Generally, they are
taken in this order: 100, 700, 200, then 800.

Here are the course catalog numbers for the classes, in order to reduce any
confusion:

ICS 100: IS-100.b Introduction to Incident Command System, ICS-100
<https://training.fema.gov/IS/courseOverview.aspx?code=IS-100.b> -
(10/31/2013)

(Note: there are many ICS 100 classes for different disciplines, but they
are all basically the same except for using different pictures and
discipline-specific examples. 100.b is the generic ICS 100 that will meet
your needs)

ICS 700: IS-700.a National Incident Management System (NIMS) An Introduction
<https://training.fema.gov/IS/courseOverview.aspx?code=IS-700.a> -
(10/31/2013)

ICS 200: IS-200.b ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
<https://training.fema.gov/IS/courseOverview.aspx?code=IS-200.b> -
(10/31/2013)

ICS 800: IS-800.b National Response Framework, An Introduction
<https://training.fema.gov/IS/courseOverview.aspx?code=IS-800.b> -
(1/20/2017)

Please let me know if you have any questions!

73,

Don
