as we had been discussing portable operating -- if I were to be doing SSB or digital mode operating from a park -- a rig to consider is the BITX - pictured at (or later near) the top of this website --

the assembled boards come from India -- but the user must put it into a package (not so hard with the example shown here).  a decent SSB receiver with xtal filtering, nice PLL, display etc.  I am sure this thing will run until sunburn, bugs or fatigue set in with a small gel cell.  I imagine recipes are out there to add a small amplifier  - say 20 watts or so would be a nice one-S-unit boost.  such a rig should do well on digital modes (well all but RTTY in a contest ....).

FYI - enjoy your radiations.  I am enjoying my 'appliance rig' enough -- and also my little WSPR transmitter that I described earlier.
