I think Phil may have come to the solution here... a little analysis:

- Requirement: Access to information stored on the computer in the basement.

So we don't need to run applications on the remote host, just grab files 
that it has. So I think the easy answer is to share the folder 
containing that data with the hosts / users that need access to it. 
Windows 7 has a homegroup feature that tries to help you do this by 
generating a passcode for all the pc's you want to share between.
