General Notes from CWC Meeting Dec 4 2017
On Monday Jeff – KC3HWU, Pete – WV3S and Steve – N3SB met to discuss the
committee’s survey results and navigate a path forward to best serve the
membership’s interest in operating CW. The survey was taken by 19 members.
In the end, we decided on the three-tier approach:
· Beginners who needed to learn characters
· Intermediates who needed to work on speed
· Advanced who needed to work on sending, receiving, and QSOs
Beginners shall be directed to one of the many resources on the web and
smartphones to learn characters and numbers. During their self-study, they
will have a mentor checking in periodically. This gives motivation to keep
focused.
Intermediate students shall be given a series of files, offered over time,
to copy. It was suggested that prizes be given for the fastest copy. File
content was not discussed but could be simply text from a book or simple
QSO dialog.
Advanced students shall be assigned training buddy to practice with.
Advanced students may be tested at general meetings for accomplishment
badges or other recognition. The “test” would be at some set of speeds and
would also evaluate sending. Students can use either straight keys or any
number of keyers.
We'd introduce each “class” with an opening meeting where we would
distribute a list of on-line resources and other information.
The kit building preference will be placed into a separate committee.
There is significant interest with building transceivers, oscillators, etc.
but feel that pursuit is best left to a specialized committee.
We recognize that celebrating achievement was an important part of keeping
students engaged, but did not settle on what that might be. This plan
involves mentors and training buddies. Much like a karate studio, advanced
and intermediate students are very well suited to guide the developing
students beneath them.
Standby for more resources. It’s never too early to begin learning and
practicing.
