yes everything is possible - including emulating windows (why when any ancient PC from a yard sale should work more easily?).
the more complex a layer - it seems - the more things that must each be configured correctly. it certainly is possible, but a bit maddening. i would borrow a PC from somewhere in the house, okay here is the hurdle - needing a USB-serial adaptor (unless the thing you bought for the IC706 includes USB?). either way, see if you can get your hardware working with a simple PC with some simple piece of software. even getting all the port settings correct in the PC can be a challenge.
there are other logging packages that use a PC interface - I suggest trying something simpler to show the hardware and PC software are properly working. maybe list members can suggest something - my choices likely don't fit your style - AC2C log (skcc), a utility for the K2, WINLOG32 (maybe), even N1MM might be easier to get working.
I would have thought it you bought a interface special for the IC706 it would have a simple software utility to check it out? Maybe a websearch might find one.
Hang in there - integrating radios, especially older ones, to a PC is not easy. (I added a cute FT817 to my shack, I plan to get it onto digital modes, but I am not motivated to interface it to a PC for log purposes).

I tried all your options. Nothing worked. Tried everything from going through the USB settings to turning off CI-V transcieve in the radio. Opened a ticket with HRD will see what that gets me. All the settings are correct for the radio. And really don't want to go and buy another $25 cable... to see if that's the problem. Could it be an issue with the virtual machine that's running windows?

>> I've never used it BUT I'm pretty sure they would want to know of your problems Kyle. SO send them a complete list of yout set up and your experiences. Also, as others have said the order in which you start/turn on things may be very important. If you still have no luck then let them, Ham Radio Deluxe, know the order(s) of starting things you're tried. 73 de KE3FL,

All the settings are correct and it worked once then it froze and lost connection and now won?t connect. All the settings remained the same. Still won?t connect. Any ideas?
