it will be interesting to get reports from the retired crew, if any.  

The most common enhanced 2m propagation is ducting -- the atmosphere layers are such that signals bend further.  I myself have worked 600 miles of so using this means on SSB.  Once I remember a nice opening to Delaware where I worked all 3 of its counties on FM.  

Really big high power stations might be able to make contact with Florida via ducting, maybe.  

More rare is sporadic E propagation via the ionosphere - the same type of propagation that happens on 6 and 10 meters -- and lower.  E-layer hop distances increase with higher frequency -- maybe a common distance on 2m is around 1000 miles.  I have one 2m Es contact -- to Oklahoma -- 30 watts SSB to a small yagi.  

One small note -- occasionally listening to the FM broadcast band one can hear 'DX' stations overtake weak local stations, due to either phenomena.  Same thing can happen with TV.  
Special propagation is pretty rare on 2m.  Much more common on 6m.  I didn't cover aurora, meteor scatter -- which small stations can enjoy, or moon bounce which requires big stations.
