HI kyle; There are two elements in the process of operating CW. The first element is learning the characters. The second element is proficiency. This element is geared to increasing speed of Character recognition, then transferring that intelligence from the brain down to the paper via pen, pencil, verbalization, and/or keyboarding. A good way to do this is to copy live qsos and W1AW right thru the clutter of man-made noise and congestion. There are many ways to do it and many different techniques. All have merit and all will work to different levels of success. Tapes and recordings are pure and unaffected by qrm or qrn. Since I had to teach CW a great number of years ago, things have evolved. My favorite method was to teach the folks to pick a spot on the wall, do not look at the paper and simply write down the character that you heard, right or wrong!!! You break two bad habits immediately. 1. Anticipating the next character 2. Becoming involved with the text of the traffic. Remember, Your job is to communicate...... not to administrate..... just get the message text on paper as transmitted. The best way to get it done is to acquire a decent receiver or transceiver, learn the alphabet of CW Morse, forget the punctuations , do learn the numbers!!! Comma, period characters can come later. I used to be able to take a group of folks from Zero to Five Words per Minute in eight hours. If you play an instrument, or have a sense of music, you will find that you have a bit of an advantage in that you possess "tonal" quality.recognition. It may be "Physico Babble" to some, but I have seen it work out for a lot of musical folks to their advantage. Basics.... Get a rig that can copy CW on 80, 40, 20 meters CW. Learn the Alpha and numerical characters in five character groups, copy those that you recognize by picking a spot on the wall and not looking at the paper when you write it down. Practice increases speed over time. No rush!! A methods work..... Copying live transmissions has the advantage learning to copy code thru noise, qrm and signal fade. It's all good. I had a higher success rate with my particular way of teaching...Regards, Joe K3FPE
