[K3PZN-List] EMP preparedness

Valid points Curt, and relevant. There is a counter/survival culture that spends a lot of time discussing EMP preventative measures. The US Gov does so as well.
Two examples: Infragard, the public-private sector preparedness initiative through the FBI has three major special interest groups (areas of concern): large-scale attack (terrorism, etc.), cyber (think Snowden), and EMP. There's a reason it's on the list - high altitude detonation of a nuclear warhead being the main driver.
Secondly, for those in any kind of emergency management setting, you may have noticed space weather forecasts are now part of IAPs and briefings. More so for temporary communications blackouts but on the extreme scale, solar driven EMP events are very real.
In reality, Kyle, even if your radio was rendered safe after an EMP event, the PD/FD/Hospital equipment would be toast, so there may not even be support to give, but I think it's a great discussion to have. May even be fun to test out - well up the the point of generating an EMP or destroying equipment. Commercial EMP protection is expensive - very expensive. Cages, grounding, door brushes, etc make for an expensive system. But why not see what you can do small scale?

Lots of counter culture stuff on the web on diy emp preparation. Yes we have plenty of more likely operating challenges than emp. Yes except for maybe needing to cut the cord Scott has a cool idea.

God forbid we have an EMP (Electromagnetic pulse) all of our radios and power supplies and possibly antennas would be worth nothing but the copper value. So I know someone of you including myself have been slowly working toward emergency preparedness and I've been thinking. If something like that where to happen all of our radios would be toast.

Police dept, hospitals etc for the public because no one else will be able to communicate. If it can be done to protect against EMP we should consider adding protection to the go kits around the county again so if something happens we can still operate.
