Try the ARRL Handbook, which has an excellent discription of how best to take on RG-58. In 50 Plus Years, my favorite attack is to first slide the PL-259 Barrel down the feed line, followed by the adaptor, then put a loose knot in the line to prevent the connector body and adaptor from moving down the feedline. Next, cut the outer black sheath completely around with an exacto model knife fitted with a Number eleven blade, then run a "cut" down the feedline to the tip. Peel the shield back to the feedline. push the adaptor forward and to the bottom of the "Peeled" shield.measure the body of the PL-259 and strip the center conductor to bare wire with a length long enough to clear the tip of the PL-259 by about an eighth of an inch. Flare the shield outward and cut it with a pair of shears or scissors to fit the adaptor so that the shield can be clearly seen inside the Barrel of the PL-259. Solder thru the holes. Feel Solder to the Tip of the connector and let it suck into the tip portion of the PL-259. Let it cool, then neatly hack off the potion hanging out of the plug. This assumes you are using a PL-259 and not a BNC. Check the Handbook for pictorials which are there. Do the same thing to the other end. Now.....Pull out the VOM and set it to Ohms X 1,000. Check Tip to Tip, body to body, then tip to body to insure that you do not have a short to ground. It takes a few times to learn to do it correctly, but you won't forget the experience. Practice on a couple of Jumpers for use with SWR Bridges or other add-ons. After a few burnt fingers, cold solder Joints and other events resulting in lighting up things, you will finally get it to all come together....It's a rite of passage with all Hams. Part of learning the craft. John Hart K3KWO and I (Joe - K3FPE) have burned up our share of coax over our 40 year plus at odd hours and locations. Regards, Joe K3FPE.

you may need to try some different techniques to remove that outer conductor. one approach is to slice a knife straight through just the outer plastic, then try to peel the outer conductor back. while it may not be the best quality, I am suspicious you can get it to work.
plan B is to bring it and a few tools to a club meeting, and we can put one of the experts to work at it.

Hi all,
I'm built a 2m yagi but can get the coax to work... I need to exchange the elements for copper ones because I have found that you cant solder things to aluminum. I bought RG-58u coax from radio shack and wasted $16 because when I try and strip it it takes all the braiding with it and theres not enough left except for the center conductor. Any thoughts?
