Hi Don: HF mobile ops is a lot of fun but..... Depending on what you are driving, you really have to use caution due to Presence of RF Current. Some auto systems are extremely sensitive and a blown on-board computer can be a very expensive "Fix". You really have to spend some time researching RF effects on certain models. Auto Manufacturers are not cognizant with regard to systems protection and proper ground/shielding. They also do not care in the least with regard to expending a few more cents or go that extra mile to protect on-board computer chips, system boards and micro components. You can set up mobile rigs that are perfectly OK. The vehicle experiences some type of failure that is warranty covered and suddenly....you were running ham radio equipment which probably was faulty and the dealer informs you that the liability for replacing a component falls on you. You really have to be careful and do a lot of reading and be certain that your warranty will not be voided by the presence of HF Ham equipment used as a mobile station in you car. That is one reason that mobile operations have declined these past few years. My advice is to just use common sense and be certain that things that should be grounded are grounded and that transients go where they should be going. High SWR is another killer and cannot be overlooked. A mobile installation is no place for questionable COAX cable, connections, or connection to Questionable Antennas, which are the single greatest killers of radios and vehicle electrical systems. 73 Joe K3FPE

Let me know Don what you find out. I have not had much luck trying to
bond my own cars or RV for mobile. I can make 40m work ok but anything
lower 20m, 15m, and 10m seems to be a no go. Keeps picking up alternator
noise even though I have it on separate power supplies.
