The 8900 is just traditional FM the digital capability that they talked about is 9600 baud packet.
The C4FM mode is converting voice to a data stream and sending the voice as a bit stream. In addition it has a pure data mode that allows the user to transfer files or other non voice things.

Subject: [K3PZN-List] Fusion Repeater
The new UHF fusion repeater is on the air at the repeater site. Larry
and I were missing a few parts so we were not able to connect the
external controller. Until we get that done it can't be linked to the
other repeaters. The repeater is in auto mode so if you have a Yaesu
C4FM radio you can use it in digital mode, if not traditional FM will
still work as usual.

I have an FT-8900 it's supposed to have some kind of digital connection but I think it was way before Fusion became real so I doubt it works, anyone know? I haven't really been interested in digital comms but if it does work I'd like to look into it.
