well you did not mention if the rig is FM only or all mode? (both bands in same rig sounds all mode to me)
CW/SSB tends to be mostly active during contests, especially these higher bands. a few watts into a yagi on these odd bands are coveted by vhf ops.
on FM I am thinking there still may be a few 220 MHz repeaters around. check to see if T-MARC has a list. when 144 MHz was congested 220 was a popular slow lane for rag chewing. activity might be even more scarce on 900 MHz except for maybe ATV. if you have a 220 antenna, you can try monitoring and calling on one of the nearby repeaters to see if there is anyone there.
speaking of scarce machines -- perhaps we should consider a special interest net of some kind to put our Sykesville 2m machine to use.
