The FT-950 uses a standard (8? pin) microphone connector, so you have me thinking with your use of the term 'modular' that the FT-897 uses an ethernet style connector like an FM mobile rig?  Yikes - we would have a mismatch -- and I don't remember the club owning any Yaesu rigs?

Sounds like you are after a second rig for ssb.  I could bring my ft950 for this, or maybe someone will offer something newer.  I don't have a heil style headset but I sm thinking you do thst would fit the ft950.
