Curt,
First of all that's not singling out people its utilizing manpower that has capabilities others may not have... its good for the group because it shares the load AND it generates interest among the others in the group.,...
Second the guy you might want to contact is Mike K3MMB he is pretty knowledgeable both from a communications stand point and also from the stand point of how to leverage help/resources. He already has a MESH network up and working in Fredrick Co.
THe really nice thing about MESH is that YOU DONT HAVE TO BE A NETWORKING GURU WITH LOTS OF RESOURCES !!!! If the guys that live close in to Westminster were to put up a MESH node at their house you would do a lot of emergency work with it.. AND its ham radio.. Not part 15, read the docs. While it is true that you could get a lot farther with a node up say 400ft above the area its not all that necessary.. the nodes are self configuring in that they auto sense when new services come on line or a new node comes on line.
But is there any interest in this area? I haven't heard anyone say lets go.. or not interested or anything.
At one time the Columbia club had a high speed network (56kbaud) packet system in Carroll county and Howard county.. this would be just like that only much much faster. Think about it...the possibilities are endless and if you don't want to use it for emergency work there are always other things you can use it for.. a chat node.. ftp node.. personal web pages...private switched telephone network .. the possibilities are really endless

Folk:
I have learned via our SM that we have significant ham WiFi (aka Mesh networking) activities in our midst. And a guru who gives presentations in an adjacent county. It does seem like a useful tool to add to our capabilities.
Its likely a bigger project than any of us can handle -- but I see many resources (aka people) in the club with analogous experience.
We will need folk to determine how we would use this in service -- Tony, Joe ?? This of course is most important. Please read the wiki link I sent earlier.
We need some network savvy people -- Sean, Eric, Andy ....
And maybe a few who do RF -- pretty much all of us.
(I don't normally single people out, but want to emphasize we have the folk to do this).
It does seem like a project to energize the club with its diverse facets. We need some club budget for hardware that the club will use but it should not be substantial.
And a few pioneers who will get something working before the club initiative is operating -- Jim has already suggested his interest.
I am thinking this should be the focus of a fall meeting, but if someone wants to prepare a short appetizer for an upcoming meeting that would also be good.

Hi Curt,
I noticed on your reflector some interest in MESH. Keith, KB3TCB (editor: lives in Frederick area), does a really great presentation at clubs on it and is working hard to spread
the word. You might want to contact him to have him over for a meeting
presentation. If we can get enough interest and an infrastructure in
place we'll really be able to provide some high speed solutions for
emcomm. Steve, N3SB, really kind of started it off years ago with the
zigbee.
