[K3PZN-List] Field Day Station Tentative Bands (FD bulletin #2)

With the confidence that we will find a place to operate - here is what I am thinking for station assignments -- all subject to OUR refining --

SSB1: 20m
SSB2: 40 and 15m
SSB3: 80 and 10m (gives us ability to work 10m if/when it opens)

CW1: 80/20m
CW2: 40/15m

Digital: 80/40/20 (operate in a different band than CW wherever possible)

Note this arrangement has 6 rigs (class = 6A).  Of course we will scale down based on the size of the operator team.  For example, digital could be merged with a SSB station, or CW could similarly be merged.  You are welcome to question my sanity and suggest something different.

Note this starts to define our antenna needs - a future bulletin topic.

I also suggest things can be more fun if the operators move to different posts.  The paradigm of an operator merely bringing their rig to the field and operating it for X hours seems to be constraining to me.

I find it fun to operate a different rig - as it was at FD I have gotten to experience these fine rigs in the past:
in no particular order Omni 6, Omni 7, K3, Argonaut 5, FT-1000, IC-whatever Andy used to own, etc.  Who knows maybe I can operate John's new KX3 at some point (even though this won't likely be what he sets up for his main FD station).

One thing I forgot to mention last bulletin -- all our stations should be equipped to allow a second op (or visiting non-ham) to operate 'shot-gun' -- either two sets of phones, and/or a speaker available.  We literally want to get everyone on the air.

Inspiration wanted - and your commitment to participate!  Email me if you are willing to host a station.

Subject: [K3PZN-List] Field Day Station Preparation

Its almost June ....

Just a few notes on this topic, along with a call for volunteers to set up stations.  Last year we ran 4 HF stations, perhaps this year we can aim for a couple more if we will have enough operators.  (We'll make a call for operators in a follow-on message).

A lesson from last year - set up the complete station in the same configuration it will be at field day!  We had trouble with PC's not being properly configured with the log software (it wasn't me) and cables not being proper for a rig (that was me!).  Yes literally set up the complete station at home (it can be all but the FD antenna) to verify the gear is ready.

Preference if possible is to run all our stations with the same logging software - this will allow operators to easily be deployed across rigs without needing retraining.  Last year we ran N1MM as its a potent contesting package (ok I realize FD is not a real contest but the automation is appreciated).

Something else that worked well last year was sharing a few antennas between modes - it meant we had fewer antennas to erect - a nice virtue if it is dreadfully hot.

Please email myself with your interest in setting up a station.  Also FD related messages on the reflector are welcome also.
