Nice rig. Usually the best answer is the band you here the strongest signals on, especially when running 5 watts (QRP). At the moment, 15m (21 MHz) seems to have the most bang for your watts.
For home use, a bigger antenna would help. I may be able to scronge some materials for a dipole (I don't think I have any coax but I could provide some connectors for it).
Spring is coming soon - when we get into May, 6 meter (50 MHz) openings will get more common. A nice 2 element beam for 6m can be made cheaply with PVC pipe.
Let's dialog via email, and we can chat as needed to get you something setup.

Subject: [K3PZN-List] New Radio /and advice
I finally own a radio. Got an FT-817. Now the questions is, what are some good bands for me to try around here? It's only about 5 watts, and I have an ATAS 25 antenna to go with it, so keep that in mind. VHF/UHF, I will try connecting to local repeaters, but I was really wondering if anyone has suggestions on HF spots to try.
Thanks
Eric
