Curt,

More than that... end fed (ZEP) antennas are unballanced antennas and some care must be taken to get rid of the common mode problems that they pose. .. ie. a good ground screen coupled with an UNUN..

Ray

the funny thing is that an end-fed Zep is actually named this because it was used on a large balloon!

see for example:  http://www.w4ymi.com/andy_w4uld/END%20FED%20ZEPP/EFzeppnew.htm

also if you do some google research you will find info on antennas deployed by balloon.  also, do required research related to being a hazard to aircraft as to what may be required.  Folk are most motivated to do this sort of thing for 80 or 160 m.

end fed antennas are less popular because they require more complex matching than many other antennas.

one other note - many folk who operate portable use an end-fed half wave antenna, with the objective of eliminating the feedline completely.  I can provide references (or google yourself - one ham in 5-land has a very nice technical website on this that literally illustrates tuning it).

Hello Everyone

ok here is my question can you mount an end feed zep antenna vertically?  Ok
wild idea from the new ham I was thinking of mounting and endfeed zep to a
helium balloon and sending it up about 150 feet?  Your thoughts my fellow
hams?  I think I can get my hands on a 20ft reusable helium balloon.
