Ray,

Yes you can, we've done it any number of times at ARES events, a laptop for the digital stuff & an HT.

Like any other mode of RF communication it depends on the distance, power, antenna & stuff in between.

I hope one of the other guys tells you the newer digital mode we've been using since I can't remember but it only used the mic for the radio to send the data from the laptop speakers and I used a PC mic to pick up the data from the HT speaker, really cool not having to wire everything up!

ok so here is Rays next question to the group

What would be the best digital signal to use over 2m radios using laptops 
and hrd software?

Kerri and I would like to try using digital over our HT's  and laptop is 
this even possible?
