Ray,
Thats good news.. I have been trying to get hold of my friend but he is evidently on vacation.. wish I got that much vacation.
On the subject of grounds .. they can be a real problem. In Carroll co we have pretty good grounds here but you still need to take care in constructing your station ground.
Can you describe the problems you are having .. maybe I can tell you how to tell if the ground is good enough. There are simple tests to tell that ya know.
Ground problems are most prevelent when you have a long ground wire such as when the station is located on the second floor of a building. At this point the ground can become a significant portion of a wavelength and will resonate at various frequencies.

hey Jim took the radio to the club last night we went into the club shack
and hooked it up it appears to be ok. Now I think the problem is in the
ham shack, looks like it may be a ground issue. still not sure but went
home and hooked up the rig it looks to be ok for the moment.

Yes look W5ZHI and email him.. I think it is w5zhi at comcast.net. I have known
this gentleman since 1970 .. he has repaired several of my radios when I did
not have time to mess with them.. he used to be a resident of MD (W3GBE) and
is an excellent tech.I believe his prices are pretty fair and he will tell
you ahead of time his hourly rate.
If you need it I can pave the way with a telephone call

I tend to agree with Jeff that repair of this may be more costly than what
you paid for the rig. (I don't necessarily agree with his thought that
domestic is always better - in general they have priced themselves out of
the lower cost rig market. I do confess to owning one domestic and one far
east rig - I am happy with both of them).
I presume you mean the unsettling noise is on receive?
It is important to rule out the power supply, to insure it is not at fault.
Checking its output voltage with the rig on receive, and (briefly) on
transmit may tell you if it might be at fault.
email me direct also as needed.
Curt

Hello everyone
Ray here (kb3vwk) well my 200$ Yasue ft 840 that I bought in June died
during the cw contest tonight. I was wondering if anyone could offer a good
repair company. It won't transmit and there was lots of unsettling
electrical noises. So time to unplug and regroup and ship out.
regards ray
