[K3PZN-List] Help with Noise on 160M - Finksburg Area (J Sears) (Stu Benner-W3STU)

Jim,
Glen A. Booth is a tech for the Customer Reliance Group. He works for John Short of the Customer Reliance Group. He is dispatched out of Piney Orchard (Below Ft. Mead). Most likely not a HAM! He is a "power" type person working mostly connections problems and RFI. So he will know noise, but probably not familiar with meters. I did forward him the emails that flew around that listed the high noise areas. Let me know how it turns out.

Happy Holidays

Ok Here is the Scoop! I just talked to John Short  410-470-8688. He is the Supervisor for Customer Reliability and Maint. Group. They are responsible for locating radio interference

I think the person doing power line interference is K3RFI. He lists info on QRZ...

Well my dog is female and not likely to water the stake.. besides most poles do not have ground rods.. In fact they only appear every several poles..

KF3AK and I listened to his AM radio as we rode down 140 to Sandymount road and down Lawndale Road.   140 is terrible.. it dropped off after we got part way down Lawndale and was almost nil back by Petes place. On my Peachwood court it was also low on 530Khz. However as low as it sounds on 530Khz on 1.82 it was still S8 today on my receiver. It will be interesting to see if it rains tomorrow and what the level is after it rains for a few hours.

Anyone know the email for the BGE interferance troubleshooter?  I am gonna put in a request to him to see what he can do.  At bare minimum he can come out and see what I am talking about.

All of my grounds are good and the rod on my electrical box and the ground on my coax entrance is tight and secure. I have run my radio off a battery and turned off all of the power in the house and the problem is still the same.  Go figure it couldnt be something easy.. NOOOO  I gotta have a massive problem.  TOnight SM4CAN was S3 listening on my beverage (even though there is still some raw ac on it but very weak) at the same time his signal on my inverted L was S8 and he could not be heard at all.

Phil,

Regarding 1 & 3: When you hear hooves, assume horses not zebras.
Regarding 2: While it could be a bad connection, it's just as likely related
to perfectly good connection along with an undesired leakage path due to a
damaged insulator or the like.

Regards,
Stu Benner (W3STU).

Stu,

1. "... it is highly unlikely that it's due to a poor earth connection."
2. "The water usually provides a leakage path across the damaged pole
hardware thereby squelching the spark. "
3. "Pouring water on a pole's  ground rod is not likely to do a thing other
than make the weeds grow better :)"

1. Sorry mate, this was a QST article & I believe they looked at the ground
rod & it was due to "poor connection" though your scenario is a more
probable one.

2. Ture on all counts damaged pole or poor ground, either way it's a poor
connection.

3. True, no matter what about the weeds, not true according to the article
because this is what they did & it worked to eliminate the problem. A
confusing issue was that it was sometime good on "dry" days, but when they
saw the dog water the stake they understood the reason for that as well. ;-)
