Hurricane Irene Resource Net etc
I want to say that I thought the resource net and hourly-type check-in worked very well for this event.
I was also able to download software & plug in a microphone to my laptop to run & use MT63 all within about 15 minutes of deciding to give it a try thanks to the help of Steve, N3SB.
Anyone with a computer and a small mic for the PC input can do this the software & mode seems to be very robust/forgiving. I was using an old DELL XP Hamfest special laptop, $100, with nothing added. I used the standard sound card that came in the laptop and the built-in speaker(s) which seemed to be under the touch pad, so I pointed my rig mic at the touch pad & it worked fine. The small mic I used was made for computers and I just had it above the rig speaker about 2" except I had an external speaker plugged in which was actually about three feet and one shelf away. I'll have to check to see if any sound was coming out of the rig speaker when I get home today, if I remember.
I want to apologize to Steve for not getting my email until after the event since he supplied the net control station script and I used the old standard script modified for this event.
Other than that I was glad for the opportunity to be the NCS again in order to brush up on my NCS skills.
I would have liked to have been able to come out to one of the sites but was told by my YF that she wanted me home if anything happened. this is a real issue for this kind of wide-spread event such as a hurricane. We will need to see if this eventuality can be addressed in some satisfactory way.
We can volunteer but NOT if we (or our spouses) are worried about the home front while we're not there to provide whatever protection for family and property we can during such an event.
